Weathershield like to be beside the seaside
Bowmore Distillery’s close proximity to the sea is vital in determining the final character of its Single Malt Scotch Whisky, but the harsh environment has played havoc with the centuries old building, until now. Dulux Trade Weathershield Maximum Exposure Smooth Masonry Paint has been used to protect the distillery from the most extreme elements, and is even being used on the building’s sea wall.
Bowmore Distillery has stood on the shores of Loch Indaal, on the Hebridean Island of Islay, since 1779, and is one of the village’s most famous landmarks. The rendered masonry is exposed to the severest of conditions, including the constant tides, heavy rain and winds and salt deposits. An exterior coating was required to provide exceptional protection against corrosion.

The specialist exterior paint is both salt and chemical resistant. Unique ICI technology also makes it up to five times more flexible than conventional masonry paints, meaning it resists flaking and cracking for longer.
Says Sam Graham, of Graham Decorators, “Not only does Weathershield Maximum Exposure Smooth Masonry Paint offer the most durable exterior solution, with up to 15 years protection, it also became a crucial tool in enabling us to get the job done.
“We had to work around changeable weather conditions and the tides to complete the project, meaning any paint used had to be fast drying. We only had seven hours in between tides for the paint to be applied and dry before it was subjected to the sea. Weathershield Max is shower resistant in just 15 minutes and was an absolute godsend under quite pressurised circumstances.”
Water-based, Dulux Trade Weathershield Maximum Exposure Smooth Masonry Paint can be applied over solvent-based products and provides an attractive matt finish. The product is available in 420 Dulux Trade colours, which have been carefully selected for their durability and lightfastness. Colours are also available from the Classic Colour Card and the BS4800 range.
