Dulux Trade helps City of York Council go greener

City of York Council has kicked off a comprehensive trial of advanced low carbon paint systems for the maintenance of its housing stock as part of a wider sustainability initiative. The council has selected the revolutionary range of Weathershield products from Dulux Trade - including its new water-based exterior gloss system - which it will be putting through its paces to determine the best performing and best value solution for maintaining its substantial property portfolio.

The Dulux Trade Weathershield range comprises both water-based and solvent-based formulations, offering ultra-durable protection for exterior masonry and timber. City of York Council is looking to reduce the environmental impact of its buildings, so it has chosen to test both water-based products and the new low-VOC Weathershield Exterior Gloss System (WEGS), which has been reformulated to comply with the impending VOC 2010 regulations, without compromising its superior performance. WEGS is the only solvent-based exterior gloss system currently on the market to be fully compliant ahead of the legislation change. Providing up to eight years protection, WEGS can significantly increase maintenance cycles, saving time, money and unnecessary disruption to tenants.

City of York Council has also chosen Weathershield Quick Drying Gloss and Undercoat for its housing stocks' external trim, as it is the first exterior gloss on the market to offer six years of protection for woodwork. The range comes in a choice of over 620 colours, giving the council unrivalled choice in creating inspirational exteriors for its tenants. The front doors of the properties will be painted using the Weathershield Exterior Gloss System (WEGS), in one of 22 specially selected colours picked by the council for their tenants with the help of Dulux Trade colour consultants, to give unrivalled protection against the elements and instant 'kerb appeal'.

Particularly suited to the changeable British climate, Weathershield Maximum Exposure Smooth Masonry paint has been selected for the properties' exterior render. Five times more flexible than conventional masonry paints, it actively resists flaking and cracking, so can protect the exterior masonry for up to 15 years.

City of York Council has a long standing relationship with Dulux Trade - in fact, it was one of the first councils to use WEGS to extend its maintenance cycles by up to seven years. It has conducted many trials of our exterior products over the years and the fact that it returns to Dulux Trade paints time and time again is testament to the superior performance and cost savings our products offer.

The council's environmental values are also closely aligned with our own ethos. Our 'Step Towards Greener' programme, for example, is working to improve the environmental footprint of our products throughout their life cycles. We fully support its drive to enhance the sustainable profile of its properties, and we are confident that the exceptional protection, superior durability and cost savings associated with Weathershield products will continue to impress the council for years to come.
