Specialist coatings from Dulux Trade have been used to help the transformation of Derby Rail Station. In particular, Dulux Trade Metalshield Gloss Finish was selected for the station's metal footbridge to create a durable, long lasting finish for the high traffic area.

This major improvement project was driven by East Midlands Trains, which manages the station, building owners, Network Rail and Derby City Council. Working in partnership, the organisations tasked development group, Bowmer and Kirkland, and painting contractors, AJ Coatings, to modernise the building, and crucially, achieve a high standard of finish that will look pristine for years to come. In addition to this, a major challenge for the project was the painting timescale.
Mark Hurst, of AJ Coatings, explained: "Throughout the works, the station was open during the day, with people catching their trains as usual. As we wanted to cause as little disruption as possible, all the painting work needed to completed at night and be dry before the early morning traffic."
With this in mind, Dulux Trade Metalshield was chosen for the metal footbridge due to its impressive quick-drying properties. Specially formulated for metal, the coating has a unique solvent-based formulation that can be overcoated within 4-6 hours.
In addition to speed, Mark Hurst describes how value and performance were further criteria for the project: "In this day and age, demonstrating cost effectiveness is essential. Dulux Trade Metalshield was an obvious choice as it offers up to 8 years metal protection, helping to lengthen maintenance cycles. We also opted for Dulux Trade Diamond Eggshell due to the fact it is ten times tougher than vinyl silks, which is vital in such a high traffic area."
Dulux Trade Diamond Eggshell was selected for its excellent opacity and ability to cover the areas of staining on all the facer boards and baulk heads on the site. Another coating under the ICI Paints AkzoNobel umbrella, Glidden Trade Endurance Masonry Paint, was also used on the rendered ceiling to cover further staining.
Mark Hurst described the complete transformation of the site: "Before the work started the building was looking dated and in need of renovation. Along with the improvement work carried out by East Midlands Trains, the coatings have helped to completely transform the appearance of the station - now it is modernised, with a light and clean look."
