Dulux Trade Light and Space paint helps to create a Grand Design

Shades from the Dulux Trade Light & Space colour range have been used in the decoration of a new build mews property in London, which recently featured on the Channel 4 TV series, Grand Designs. Dulux Trade Light & Space Diamond Eggshell and Dulux Trade Light & Space Diamond Matt were selected for the high specification project to achieve a durable and attractive result.

Achieving a lifelong ambition, owner of Hogarth Architects, Ian Hogarth designed his four-bed family home incorporating the style and characteristics of a traditional mews property, whilst giving it a modern edge, through state of the art fixtures and fittings.

The end terrace house, located in Kensington, has been designed with 50 per cent of the building underground. In order to make the most of the limited daylight, a key objective of the project was to use products that would enhance the light in the property.

Ian Hogarth said: "I wanted to keep the house quite minimalist, whilst maximising light to create a radiant, airy and relaxing place for the whole family to enjoy. To brighten up the interior, we chose Dulux Trade Light & Space colours as they optimise the light, and ensure the rooms feel lighter and more spacious."

The first of its kind, the Dulux Trade Light & Space range is created through a unique combination of innovative optical brighteners, highly reflective paint components and cleaner tinting recipes. In comparison to traditional emulsion paints, the collection absorbs an average of 50 per cent less light, enhancing luminance and making rooms feel bigger, brighter and less gloomy.

Dulux Trade Light & Space Diamond Eggshell was specified for the bathrooms because it is quick drying and provides a durable and attractive mid-sheen finish. For the rest of the surfaces in the house, Dulux Trade Light & Space in the Diamond Matt formulation was selected because of its exceptional durability. The robust coating is ten times tougher than standard vinyl matt or silk emulsions and so was the ideal choice for a busy family environment. It provides a fresh, hardwearing finish that can be wiped down easily.

Whilst the majority of the walls were painted in Absolute White, splashes of colour were used to create feature walls in the property. In particular, Dulux Trade Light & Space Diamond Matt was applied in Cotton Breeze, a soft lilac shade, to one of the walls in the kitchen, providing a striking back drop to a collage of black and white family photographs.

Alongside Dulux Trade Light & Space, coatings from the Dulux Trade woodcare range were also used. To achieve a striking, long lasting finish, Dulux Trade Weathershield Ultimate Opaque was applied in RAL 5008, a modern grey-blue shade, to the garage and external doors and frames. The high performance exterior coating, designed not to crack or flake, produces a water repellent satin finish, that protects exterior woodwork for up to ten years.

Commenting on the finished result, Ian concludes: "The house looks remarkable. I am so proud of what we have achieved and I look forward to enjoying it with my wife and children. The paint from the Dulux Trade Light and Space colour range has really enhanced the light within the house, and as the products we’ve used are so durable, they will keep it looking smart for longer."
