Dulux Trade reaches an apex in Edinburgh

The interior of the Apex Waterloo Place Hotel, a four star boutique hotel in Edinburgh, has received a dramatic transformation from Dulux Trade Contract Partner, Baxter & Gillespie, as part of its conversion from a Grade A listed building and a 1970's former office block. In particular, the painting contractor was responsible for delivering a luxurious decorative scheme for the 187-bed hotel's brassiere, Elliot's Bar and Restaurant.

The prestigious project, which was designed by Ian Springford Architects, required an exemplary level of finish and a modern, inspirational colour scheme. "Luxury and contemporary design were at the heart of the project, so it was critical that the coatings used accentuated this feel," said John Thompson, Director of Ian Springford Architects. "For Elliot's Bar in particular, a feeling of opulence was essential, so we created a sumptuous colour scheme that reflected the hotel's chic design yet also highlighted its original features."

To achieve this vision, Ian Springford selected a rich purple shade from the Dulux Trade Colour Palette and emphasised the bar's original features, in particular its traditional fireplace and trim, including dado rail and window shutters, with Dulux Trade New Work Gloss in Pure Brilliant White.

To continue the lavish feel, and to ensure the decorative scheme retains its fresh appearance, Baxter & Gillespie painted the walls within Elliot's Bar in Dulux Trade Diamond Matt. "Diamond Matt will ensure the bar looks its best for longer," said Paul Baxter from Baxter & Gillespie. "As well as being ten times tougher than conventional vinyl silk emulsions, Diamond Matt can be wiped clean easily without affecting the matt finish and it's available in over 12,000 colours. Its durability is perfect for a high traffic area like Elliot's Bar as it will help the hotel owners keep the paintwork looking good and the colour scheme pristine."

By working closely with the project's architect, and completing the decoration to a meticulous standard, Baxter & Gillespie achieved the highest standard of finish and client satisfaction. "Baxter & Gillespie worked tirelessly throughout the project and helped us at Ian Springford Architects realise the vision of luxury and contemporary design we had for the hotel," added John Thompson. "On prestigious refurbishment projects such as this, you need a painting contractor that can deliver your specification to the highest standards and Baxter & Gillespie did just that. Ultimately, using a Dulux Trade Contract Partner contributed to achieving the high quality finish required."

Following completion of the project, Baxter and Gillespie entered images of its work on Elliot's Bar into the Dulux Trade Contract Partner Showcase Competition, and it was subsequently awarded first place. Images of Elliot's Bar will now feature on the cover of the new Dulux Trade Contract Partner brochure, and will be used in trade press advertising and online.
