ICI Paints develops healthy relationship with Carillion
ICI Paints is consulting on Carillion Healths major PFI project for the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust, contributing to the main contractors achievements in sustainability, infection control and DDA compliance.
The new Childrens Hospital and Head and Neck centre, being built on the John Radcliffe site, will add a further 265 beds to the existing 800 bed hospital. The 55,000sqm building will provide general hospital services to Oxfordshires 625,000 people, when it opens in January 2007.
A colourful healing environment is particularly important in paediatric care and the project is fully embracing a vibrant colour scheme, not only to enhance surroundings but also as a method of signposting and zoning.
However, the use of colour had to be carefully considered due to the Disability Discrimination Act and Part M of the Building Regulations. ICI Paints therefore helped Carillion to design a colour scheme that complied with the regulations, without compromising aesthetic appeal.
The decoration works, which are being carried out by Dulux Trade Contract Partner Anderson Painting Contractors, also utilise Dulux Trades latest innovation, Sterishield.
Sterishield is a washable emulsion that contains a non-hazardous active silver bactericide that dramatically accelerates the decline of bacterial populations within 12 hours of contamination. This is a demonstrable improvement over standard paint where bacteria can survive 48 hours or longer. Dulux Trade Sterishield, in the highly durable Diamond Matt and Eggshell finishes, is being used throughout the hospital interior to help reduce the risk of cross infection, making the environment safer for both patients and staff.
Carillion Health is also committed to a sustainable approach to business and has incorporated a number of sustainability innovations into the contract. For their part, ICI Paints has agreed a waste strategy with the painting contractor and Carillion, and has supplied the bulk of the paint in 10 litre metal cans, which get recycled.
