MSM Architects and Paragon Decor8 join forces to go green at the Shires

Dulux Trade Ecosure has been used to decorate 144 private luxury and social housing apartments included in the new awe-inspiring Shires Shopping Centre in the heart of Leicester.

Ecosure from Dulux Trade is a range of paints that has been developed with leading sustainability charity, Forum for the Future, and is specifically formulated to have a demonstrably lower environmental impact. The Ecosure range comprises Matt, Gloss and Undercoat formulations, each water-based and offering a 'best in class' finish. Using an 'Environmental Impact Analyser,' a cradle-to-factory gate analytical tool developed with Forum for the Future, Dulux Trade has been able to measure the reduced environmental impact of the Ecosure range, using three key sustainability criteria: embodied carbon, waste produced and water consumed.

Sustainability in all areas of the residential build was of key importance to the architects at MSM, so Ecosure was specified to decorate the walls and ceilings. Nottingham-based Paragon Decor8, the Painting Contractor appointed by Jessops - the projects Construction Company - is proud to have been the first painting contractor in the UK to use Ecosure.

Paragon's John Froggatt comments: "We found that Ecosure really did represent the first true step towards sustainable paint products that genuinely deliver on application and performance. To satisfy the environmental credentials that the entire Shires project needed to demonstrate - in line with the Code for Sustainable Homes and MSM Architects' own environmental agenda - we needed to use a product that considered more than just VOC reduction. Ecosure addresses sustainability from all angles: production, packaging and recycling - it hit the mark every time."

Furthermore, Diamond Satinwood was specified for the skirting boards and doors in all 144 apartments at The Shires. The Diamond range from Dulux Trade also has strong sustainability credentials, as it offers a breakthrough in coatings technology that is able to deliver long-term cost savings and outstanding performance that significantly extend maintenance cycles. This eliminates the need for expensive redecoration, and also minimises the development's impact on the environment.

Nicolas Guichard, Brand Manager for Dulux Trade core range, said: "Until now, specifying products that deliver on sustainability and performance has been hugely challenging for architects and contractors in all sectors. Dulux Trade Ecosure is a really exciting proposition that enables specifiers to choose products that are proven to have a lower environmental impact, which helps them meet their sustainability objectives without compromising on performance."

Nicolas added: "Besides, the specification of more durable paints, such as the Dulux Trade Diamond range, can actually lower the environmental footprint over the lifetime of the building. Not having to decorate as frequently means that fewer materials with an inherent environmental impact (throughout their production and transportation) are used. It also reduces the impact of the actual decoration process."

Dulux Trade Ecosure Matt is available in Pure Brilliant White, Magnolia and the full ICI Dulux Trade colours, including Colour Palette, Professional Colour Card and Heritage ranges, as well as British Standard BS4800 and RAL Classic. Dulux Trade Ecosure Gloss and Undercoat are available in Pure Brilliant White and an extensive colour range. The Diamond range is also already fully compliant with the pending EU VOC 2010 regulations.
