ICI Paints helps tenants reach colour consensus
Communal areas within Ystad Goffa Court have been given a lift, as part of Wales & West Housing Association's maintenance programme. Working with ICI Paints and J S Seddon Painting Ltd, the housing association involved residents in the refurbishment project, resulting in a colourful new scheme that was loved by all.
ICI Paints' colour consultants also ensured that the new colour scheme met the duties of the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) requirements, which places responsibility on managers of public buildings to take 'reasonable' steps to not disadvantage disabled and visually impaired people using their facility. As a sheltered housing scheme, Ystad Goffa Court needed to comply with this requirement without compromising on aesthetic appeal.
A communal lounge, toilets and laundry room, along with stairwells, corridors and residents' front doors were all included in the refurbishment project. An ICI Paints colour consultant was brought in to put together a choice of colour schemes for each area, all of which took into account the need to enhance spatial awareness by contrasting visually adjacent critical surfaces by 30 points difference in LRV (Light Reflectance Value), as defined in the Building Regulations Approved Document Part M.
The schemes were then displayed in presentation folders for residents to consider and vote upon, with the most popular choices then implemented. J S Seddon Painting Ltd carried out the redecoration using a wide range of products from ICI Paints' Dulux Trade range. Dulux Trade Diamond Matt was one product specified, as it is ten times tougher than traditional emulsions, meaning the newly painted look will last for longer. Scrub resistant, it also means the walls can be cleaned down on a regular basis.
Ian Paterson, who headed the project for Wales & West Housing Association said: "Choosing colour schemes is always an emotive issue as colour choice is very subjective. It was important to us that our residents were happy with their surroundings, but we were mindful of the logistical problems offering 'choice' sometimes poses. The project team from ICI Paints and J S Seddon really made the consultative process work, and we're delighted with the results. The building has been transformed."
The project is part of a five year partnering agreement between J S Seddon and Wales & West Housing Association.
