As retail closures continue at a worrying rate, Dulux Trade Woodcare, one of the UK's leading woodcare brands, has launched a campaign to give independent shops a much-needed boost. Introduced to coincide with the release of a long-awaited high street report by retail guru, Mary Portas, 'The Dulux Trade Ultimate Makeover' competition is offering independent traders the chance to win a top makeover for their store using Dulux Trade Weathershield Ultimate paint.

Retail organisations of all sizes have been hard hit during these tough economic times but smaller independent shops are especially feeling the pinch as shoppers keep a closer eye on their spending. More than 8,000 independents closed their doors last year alone. The key component of Portas' report will be tackling the issues of vacant shops, preventing the creation of 'clone towns' and increasing the number of small and independent retailers trading in local high streets.
In response to these challenging times, 'The Dulux Trade Ultimate Makeover' has been launched and one lucky store will win the grand prize of a top transformation. The redecoration of the exterior and interior of the shop will be carried out using Dulux Trade Weathershield Ultimate, a specialist woodcare product, as well as a range of other Dulux Trade paints. The store owner who comes in second place will receive 500 worth of Dulux Trade products along with expert colour and paint advice from Dulux Trade. The third place winner will receive 100 of Dulux Trade products to put towards their own makeover.
What's more, the competition is also giving professional painters and decorators the chance to carry out the painting work if they nominate their local store and it goes on to win.
Commenting on the launch of the competition, Richard Bradley, Dulux Trade Marketing Manager, Trade Woodcare, said: "The past couple of years have been tough for the high street and more so for the independents who are increasingly under threat from multi- national chains, the internet and a decline in consumer spending. As such, Dulux Trade has launched 'The Dulux Trade Ultimate Makeover' competition to give the small shopkeeper a boost and a chance to revive their business.
"The competition is open for entry from any member of the public aged over 18 years, but we'd especially like the painting and decorating profession to get involved with the initiative by nominating their local shop. Once the competition winner has been selected, we'll be looking for appliers in the area to help complete the works."
To be in with a chance of winning the competition, store owners and their customers can enter by sending in photographs of the interior and exterior of the chosen store and stating why it is worthy of a makeover, in no more than 100 words.
Responses, along with contact details and photos of the nominated shop, should be sent to The Dulux Trade Ultimate Makeover Competition, Giant's Basin, Potato Wharf, Castlefield, Manchester, M3 4NB. Alternatively, entries can be submitted by email to duluxtraderesponse@tangerinepr.com. All entries must be received before 5pm on 31st January 2012.
Projects will be judged on originality, merit and the benefits the makeover would bring to the shop and the local community. The redecoration work will be carried out in March 2012, so access to the shop at this time will be vital.
Short listing will take place in February, with successful entrants then going on to an independent judging panel. The winning entrants will be informed by the end of February.
