Western Red Cedar untreated and exposed to the elements for 30 months
Same wood type and exposure as above after being treated with Weathershield Naked Wood
Buildings with untreated exterior wood, including cladding, can look great when first put up, but as the wood weathers it can swell, warp, crack and lose its original colour. Mould and fungi can also degrade the wood and cause unsightly staining.
The Weathershield Naked Wood system from Dulux Trade uses unique flexible polyurethane technology to achieve a durable protective finish which greatly outperforms conventional varnish technology. Depending on the type of wood to be coated, the number of coats applied and the degree of exposure to the elements, Weathershield Naked Wood provides long lasting protection whilst retaining the natural beauty of the wood.
| Wood Species | Performance & System Information | Durability Expectancy † |
|---|---|---|
| Teak, Larch | 2 basecoats & 2 top-coats | 3 to 4 years |
| Notes: 2 basecoats & 3 top-coats will give additional performance. | ||
| Spruce, Baltic Redwood (Pine) | 2 basecoats & 3 top-coats | 3 to 4 years |
| Notes: Softwoods are generally less durable than hardwoods. A slight darkening of the wood can be expected. | ||
| Keruing*, Meranti** | 2 basecoats & 3 top-coats | 3 to 4 years |
| Notes: The basecoat is especially important for open grained woods. Additional top-coats might be considered. | ||
| Western Red Cedar | 2 basecoats & 3 top-coats | 3 to 4 years |
| Notes: The wood will not grey when treated with Weathershield Naked Wood, but some fading of the natural red colour may occur over time. | ||
| Oak | 2 basecoats & 3 top-coats | 3 to 4 years |
| Notes: A very open grained wood for which the basecoat is vital. Additional top-coats might be considered. | ||
† Under average climatic conditions. *Keruing is a naturally resinous wood. Resin exudates may occur and lead to an unattractive appearance. **Meranti wood will not grey when treated with Weathershield Naked Wood, but some fading of the natural red colour may occur over time. Wood is a natural substrate and performance varies on different types of wood (and in some cases even on different planks of the same wood). The climate, aspect and details of the site will also affect the performance. The Weathershield Naked Wood system has been extensively tested on a variety of wood species and a guide to performance is indicated in the table above. Information about other wood species are available on request from the ICI Paints AkzoNobel Technical Advice Centre on 08444 817 818.
